Psychotherapy & Somatic Therapy

My therapeutic work evolves around and in between two poles: Psychotherapy & Somatic Therapy. Those two types can be either given as different and independent sessions or can be combined in one session. The general idea is that Somatic Therapy sessions evolve with a “bottom-up” orientation, meaning from the body and the body’s sensations towards the intellectual sphere and our thoughts. On the other hand, Psychotherapy sessions evolve with a “top-down” orientation, meaning from the intellectual sphere and our thoughts towards the body and the body’s sensations. Of course the body and the mind are always interconnected and in whichever we focus on, both sides will be affected. For example when a client asks help for high stress levels, we can work with psychotherapeutic techniques organizing thought patterns or revealing nonfunctional coping mechanisms, which will lead to reduced stress levels and also will benefit body functions like breathing. For the same client we can work with Somatic Therapy techniques that will balance muscle and fascia tensions in the body, facilitating also body functions like breathing and thus reducing again stress levels. Which style of therapy will be used or even which combination of them, depends exclusively from what fits and works better for each individual. Usually, psychotherapy fits better for those who feel comfortable talking about the issue they want to solve, while Somatic Therapy fits better for those who in general experience a difficulty or a discomfort to describe their state with words.

One of the most basic ideas that I use in my practice is the technique I call “3C Technique” described by the words: Contact – Connection – Communication. Contact derives from approach and availability. Connection comes from acceptance and synchronization. Communication stems from exchange and sharing. We create contact, then we connect and that’s how we end up communicating. This particular idea is a very general scheme that can take a completely different form for each client. For example, sometimes we will need to start from Contact in order to Communicate, and other times through Communication we will discover deficits in Contact.
